Following is another review by Geoff:

RFR2 #2 - Guns, Lawns and Esoteric Methodology
(45:37)

The Rune-rede section of this offering is a follow-up on some ideas central to Runarmal II, soon to be released. That's a way of saying you may find it useful now and even more useful later. It concerns "the methodology of discovering esoteric truths" - and if that doesn't whet your appetite, I don't know what will.

Simultaneously whimsical and serious, competing philosophies of the 18th-19th centuries CE are shown to underlie the current debate on the care of lawns. This interplay neoclassicism and its antithesis, romanticism, remains especially relevant to the Odian, and traces can be found in the most apparently pedestrian of topics. As we see, at times the philosopher needn't go further than his own yard.

In "Ripped from the Headlines", Edred has something to say about a recent Supreme Court decision on gun rights and the origins of the 2nd Amendment.

Toga or spear, what's your preference?

A review by Geoff:

RFR2 #1 - Season Two Inauguration:
Norns, Thurses and the Founding Fathers

(34:21)

An auspicious first sending of Radio Free RUNA, Season Two, has been released. It's faster paced, with a juicier new sound and format. The content mix of individual episodes will have greater variety. As much as I liked last season's talks - and some of you already know I was absolutely nuts about them - these promise to be even better!

Each show is slated move along the following lines:

*Overview
*Rune-rede
*Culture and History
*Various Grab-bag, with features like;
Listener Questions/ "Ripped from the Headlines!"/ Reviews/ "What's the Big Idea?"
*Ragnarok

If this podcast is any indication, the esoteric, exoteric and cultural sections will harmonize well. A weaving of relational ideas of nornic mysteries, the divine mind and the thursic realm was breathtaking and revelatory. Any attempt at summarizing on my part would be a disservice to you, Rune-seeker, so listen in.

A timely and patriotic segment detailing the predominately pagan roots of out country is enough to cause Bible-toting delusionals some frowns, particularly those who claim the US was founded as a "Christian nation".

Finally, a so-sad-it's-ridiculously-funny story about a local war on squirrels there in Austin ties it all together in a way only Edred can.

Hail Radio Free RUNA, a beacon in the darkness!

New RfR Talks

New RfR Talks The incomparable Geoff has reviewed two new Radio free RUNA talks now available at
http://edred.net/community/index.php?t=browse_vault

RFR #70 - ALU (25:45)

The book ALU, a very exciting project hinted at in earlier RFRs, is nearing completion. Edred talks some about its place, scope and methods.

"A decades in the making follow-up to FUTHARK, if I were to write FUTHARK today, how would I write it?...it would be ALU."

To illustrate this book is no re-hash, he reads material on a couple of Runes and promises to return again on future broadcasts. The depth of research and synthesis is stunning. Polarian Method? Damned right, and then some!

Personally I can't wait for this book. It literally goes where no other has.

Listen to this one with your ears on.

RFR #71 - "Texas, Our Texas" (31:49)

This one gets its name from the state song of Texas because of the little story Edred uses as a symbol for a larger sickness. As he discovered, the UT Austin campus apparently no longer hosts a Texas Independence Day celebration because, in the words of one of the faithful, "someone complained".

Political correctness, topic of a great past RFR (#37), is around everywhere. Here's a recent blog by "Steven", on a Daily Texan (student newspaper) blogspot:

"The Declaration of Independence was written by racist George Campbell Childress from Tennessee who was a friend of Andrew 'Indian Killer' Jackson. Anglo-American immigrants were invited into the new Mexican nation but didn't want to obey the laws here and rebelled against their adopted country. The Alamo 'heroes' were really a bunch of mercenaries and adventurers who fought for power and glory. Then the illegal, unjust U.S.-Mexican War was waged as part of the European idea of Manifest Destiny to continue to expand to the West and become larger and more powerful. There is so much of Texas history that some people simply don't want to hear about. It just feels too good to believe we have a glorious and heroic past, why spoil it what the ugly truth."

Edred begs to differ - to say the least - offers some reasons why he feels this way, and some timely ideas about real agendas. Things are rarely as they seem. Hail Edred!

By the way, adjacent to this blog entry was a link to the headline "Majority of Students Believe Humans, Dinosuars Coexisted".

RFR #43 - Introduction to the Middle Ages

RFR #43 - Introduction to the Middle Ages Another review from Geoff...

RFR #43 - Introduction to the Middle Ages

To my knowledge this is the first Radio Free Runa talk with Edreds mother in attendance. Fact is, this podcast originated from her home. (Thanks for having us Ma'am!). Her dog "Foxy" listened too, and never made a sound. That is one good dog...

"We need an 'Owners Manual' for our culture", Edred says. That's the reason for all this historical context, and not because of some fetish about the past.

My antenna is resonating. I've always been nuts about history. Even history for historys sake. But the Teacher has a more holistic idea about things...

That is, for all his wealth of detail, he never loses sight of the larger historical picture. Some students of history do this well. But almost no one uses the missing ingrediant Edred applies to his vast grasp of history: A most profound understanding born only from years of esoteric study. They don't use it because they don't have it. It not only provides a certain point of view, it is a key to truer understanding. Many anomalies and oddities suddenly make sense. Fuzzy images sharpen. The river flows. Clouds break and Sunna shows her face...

The story of Charlemagne and the Pope was most illuminating, as well as the positive attitude many leaders such as he had towards illiteracy...I'm still fuming about Charlemagnes son burning those manuscripts...

Enjoy this broadcast. You might be like me and need it the way the crops need rain.
RFR #42 - "Nazism - A Pagan Movement?"
admin, posted 04/30/09 19:29:46   » Radio Free Runa
RFR #42 - Once again, a concise review by Geoff.

RFR #42 - "Nazism - A Pagan Movement?"

Edred has talked a bit on this topic before, in RfR#24 and elsewhere, but here he devotes an entire hour. It requires a clear head and guts, things Edred seems to have plenty of... The source of this broadcast is the very timely book he's writing, **** Occultism: Myth and History.

Some Texas Pagans were scheduled to hear the talk first but had to take a rain check. Lucky us...

There's so very much bad information *out there* on this subject that has become accepted as conventional wisdom. Not only inaccurate and dishonest, it makes things harder for those of us following the path of our ancestors. No post-modern Pagan/Heathen/Asatruar need allow themselves to be so misrepresented. An issue of great depth and nuance - vital information for any thinking person looking to unravel these "difficulties of modern history ".

Thanks Edred!

Summaries of RFR 37-41
admin, posted 04/20/09 18:08:18   » Radio Free Runa
Summaries of RFR 37-41 Here, at long last, are the eagerly anticipated reviews by Geoff for Radio Free Runa talks 37 through 41.

RFR #37 - "Origins of the Cult of Political Correctness"

Everyone knows what "political correctness" means and probably has some annoying example they've encountered. (My gripe is ignorant people constantly correcting others "offensive" language, like the woman who got in-my-face angry one time for using the term "oriental". I had to ask her whether she knew the term was a synonym for "eastern", a counterpart to the word "occidental", not at all offensive).

Edred goes to the Marxian root of such sillyness - and a lot worse - and provides a look at how dumbed-down versions of a flawed original idea have filtered into everyday use...

I like the part where he speaks on the not-so-obvious links between Christianity and Marxism. As someone who was influenced by both in my earlier days, I think the comparisons are valid. Hell, I was once an admirer of "liberation theology" - which attempted to combine the two dead-ends and came up with an even bigger nothing sandwich! Live and learn...

RFR #38 - Epicureanism vs. Stoicism

Because of their enduring influence, Edred discusses the two major schools of philosophy of Hellenistic Greece and subsequent influence on later thought. Short histories of each school and their major differences are elaborated. As usual, I learned a lot.

Epicureanism, a materialist philosophy which denied the afterlife, appealed to 19th-century thinkers like Marx. On the other hand, Christian philosophers largely adapted and adopted late-period Roman Stoicism.

I kept thinking Edred was going to bring things around to a larger discussion that included our tradition, but that never happened. Maybe it's because again he's laying groundwork for future talks.

RFR#39-"Taxation and Cosmology: A Rebels Guide"

For Americans, April 15th is the deadline for filing Federal (and most State) income tax. It's a stressful time for one reason and another.

While Edred's not exactly trying to rub salt in the wound, he's not making us feel any better about it either.

Why? Unlike many countries, ours was born in bloody revolution begun as a tax protest. Intriguingly, Edred makes the case that the ideas of "Age of Reason", which fueled our countrys birth, were to some degree ways to reclaim ancient Germanic freedoms. Little by little, taxes have taken them back from us.

The more things change...

Great talk, lively too!

RFR #40 - Ancient Rome

A short course in ancient Roman culture, this little talk is packed with information.

For all the antipathy we might have towards the Roman Empire, it was an Indo-European model of success whose influence persists. As Edred says, models for learning provided by Rome to the modern world, "some good, some not so good", are multitude.

He discusses the 3 main periods Rome went through, the important offices and features of society, architectural contributions and Roman values. Very insightful.

RFR #41 - Early Christianity

"Long-haired preachers come out every night,
Try to tell you what's wrong and what's right;
But when asked how 'bout something to eat
They will answer in voices so sweet
You will eat, bye and bye,
In that glorious land above the sky;
Work and pray, live on hay,
You'll get pie in the sky when you die"
-Joe Hill

This one's a biggie, a must listen, a key to understanding the origins and true nature of Christianity. It follows naturally from RFR#40, as this "weird cult from the East" grew like a mushroom in the decay that was late Roman antiquity.

It's a clear-headed, logical and historically-based analysis. The most striking thing about it is that it doesn't seek to demonize, but to explain. No hysterical screaming or mumbo-jumbo. Most un-Christian!

One of the great appeals of the religion was the offer of "instant salvation" - big results with little effort. Another was the fantastic afterlife, concurrently granted. An early (and unintended) result was that it all sounded so good, many desperates accepted the offer and immediately committed suicide! So it suddenly becomes a "mortal sin"...

At nearly a full hour and packed with information, it's one of heftier talks yet. Pernicious Christian influence being everywhere, a person trying to free themselves completely would do well to hear it. I listened twice.

Great talk. Straight pagan common sense armed with facts, a dangerous combination!

RFR #36 - My Scholarly Books From Geoff...

RFR #36 - My Scholarly Books

This is a continuation of RfR #32, titled "My Books and Methods", a sub-topic dealing with the more scientific and scholarly works, those whose author is listed as Stephen E. Flowers, PhD, as opposed to Edred Thorsson.

It's a thoughtful and learned discussion in which Edred speaks on his works of this genre, their role and place in the overall scheme of things. Also interesting to hear is some of the specific needs that demanded such works. Lots of pertinent detail.

Have a listen yourself.
RFR #35 - Germanic and Zoroastrian Systems of Thought
admin, posted 04/07/09 17:21:25   » Radio Free Runa
RFR #35 - Germanic and Zoroastrian Systems of Thought Yet another non-review from Geoff...

RFR #35 - Germanic and Zoroastrian Systems of Thought

From the Hall at Woodharrow, E. Thorsson takes a question from a listener. As he's referred to Zoroaster in several previous RfR episodes, the query deals with the relationship between the Germanic and Zoroastrian systems.

On first hearing this sounds like the beginning of an all day slog up Ho-Hum Hill, where you'll be rewarded by a nap at the Apathy Overlook. Wrong, Runester! This lively discussion becomes most wide-ranging and relevant.

That's what I like about Edred. I've never met him, but I think he could take the most mundane question and sooner or later connect it to our deepest Mysteries.

Since this one started off with a great question [Hail, Ariman!], it didn't take any time at all. Specifically, what does Zarathrusta's dualism have to do with the polarian method, as modelled by the Alfather? I'm not going to try to describe the entire journey Edred takes in answering. It opened my eyes to many things, clarified others, made connections and brought in completely new questions. I'm going to have to listen and process some more myself...

Here are some teasers from my notes: Common misconceptions about Mazdaism and Iranian religion. The dueling dualisms of good/evil dualism vs. matter/spirit dualism, their origins and their subsequent influences. Manachaeism vs. Zoroastrianism. Pre- and post-Zoroaster Iranian thought. The mysterious role of the Scythians. Germanic connections and distinctions. Yggdrassil and the bi-polarism of Odhinn. Zarathrusta's concept of the Mean. Jesus of Nazareth as a possible initiate of Mazdan faith. Plato. Saint Augustine. The influence of Manachaean thought on the "great religions" and how this became a useful "bludgeon against the human mind and spirit". Odhinn in his many manifestations and the fight against thursic forces. Zoroaster as a model. Clarity, order and understanding in the good fight of the Odian.

An absolutely amazing broadcast!

Hail, Edred! Hail to the Gild!

RFR #34 - Practical Retribalization
admin, posted 04/04/09 06:19:51   » Radio Free Runa
RFR #34 - Practical Retribalization Another sterling review from Geoff...

RFR #34 - Practical Retribalization

Enough of the theory, Edred says, how might retribalization work? To build the "internal fire" needed certain ideological questions must be dealt with. Meant to provoke some thinking and discussion, this one's a continuation of RFR# 33, but much more on the nuts and bolts.

He doesn't offer an exact model to be copied but several general ones and some good guiding suggestions. There ought to be 100 ways of retribalizing tried. The YD gets right down to practical details and doesn't shy away from talking about the many potential problems either.

Edred wants the idea kicked around some and feedback from you because the book is still early along. "Revival in isolation is impossible".

It's a vital discussion. He may be right that the tribe must be created first, then the spiritual will follow, rather than the other way around. The opposite hasn't so worked well, but I just don't know how you'd start without a whole lot of spiritual... Another thing is I think we Americans are too individual and independent, for whatever reason, or we like to think we are... (Apologies to foreign friends as I'm not sure how these ideas apply to your country...).

RFR # 33 -- Rising Up
admin, posted 03/29/09 15:32:18   » Radio Free Runa
RFR # 33 -- Rising Up An important non-review from Geoff...

RFR #33 - Rising Up, A Philosophical Guide to Retribalization...

Besides all the other projects Edred has going, here's an idea for a new book on another difficult topic, covered in several previous RfR broadcasts - "retribalization". The entire working title is Rising Up, A Philosophical Guide to Retribalization: The Conceptualization of a Better Future for America.

It's an idea he's long been interested in, along with many Asatruar. Yet only in more recent times has he concluded that "it is not just an important idea but THE idea...practice...(and) thing which must happen in order for any kind of spiritual movement to start of the kind we dreamed of in the 1970s, which has generally been met with disappointment". For Edred, efforts were largely thwarted because they began as a spiritual movements instead of a social/cultural ones. "Religion doesn't come first, community comes first".

Regardless, the tribe remains a key idea, most dangerous to market forces. Why? In the most basic sense, it cannot be controlled and profited from. Tribalization is a revolutionary and powerful concept which must be handled with care because, "we are playing with dynamite". There is no one model that might be used but he insists any tried should focus on practical concerns, not begun on a religious or cultic basis.

Edred describes a "new tribal man" as one being integral, secure and empowered. There's a plethora of practical ideas and discussion that follows. The main reason for this book is to put such healthy ideas out there into larger society. Sowing time, if you will.

RFR #32 - My Books and Methods Another sterling review from Geoff:

RFR #32 - My Books and Methods

Classification and taking stock of ones own work isn't an easy thing to do, but that's just what Edred does here. This broadcast begins a series on his completed written works. By his own count, these number about 35 originals and 8 translations. That's a really big stack of profundity.

It's almost like you're over at his house looking at this stack and he starts explaining what each represents, how they're grouped, the motivations behind them, which were his favorites, which weren't, etc. It's going to take awhile, but you're loving it, so what's the hurry?

Edred says what motivates him to write is that there's a certain book he'd like to read, but that book doesn't exist, so he has to be the one to write it. Would that all writers used this approach - and would that they wanted to read things that mattered in the first place. There's a plenty of philosophy, insight and inside dope as well. Very interesting hearing him say some things about 9 Doors and the many other varied works and categories...

But the most powerful part of this podcast comes in the final minutes. You can just feel the intensity rising as he reveals the real point of your visit. Much more than you originally thought, it goes to the deepest core of your individual journey and our collective mysteries. A moving summation.

RFR #31 - The Truth about Truth and a Different Typology of Mankind Yet more discussion and insights from Geoff...

(As far as I'm concerned, there's not been even one of these podcasts that isn't priceless. I've got my favorites and so do you, yet they're consistently amazing. Edred has written that he is "pouring out" this teaching as an aid to personal initiation of Gilders and others. I don't know what spurred this unprecedented effort and gift to all. Something anew is brewing in our world. I'm humbled and honored to be listening in, much less pecking out these musings. I'll say it again: Tune in and resonate.)

RFR #31 - The Truth about Truth and a Different Typology of Mankind

Truth went missing from the previously treated list of virtues (see RfR#s 25& 28)but showed up all by himself over here, and the Yrmin-Drighten will tell you why. Edred's a man who thinks constantly and deeply about things that matter and he isn't afraid to change things if they need it, even when someone else thinks they're carved in stone.

That's damned Odian if you ask me. Truth can't be just another virtue if it is the foundation of all virtues. Listen to this profound and comprehensive treatment of the dual concepts of the Truth and the Lie.

The last part contains a different and more general three-fold typology of man, a non-Dumezilan but helpful method of classification. The three groups are the creators, preservers and destoyers. Seems the idea that our ancestors needed to be more in the business of preservation, while we must be more about creation, is very timely. And I can't help but think of this entire broadcast in relation to RfR# 29. In the end, isn't the occultzoid tendency a most dangerous destroyer because it not only misleads, but does so from such apparent close proximity to the esoteric?

RFR #30 - A Certain Typology of Mankind More thoughts from Geoff...

RFR #30 - A Certain Typology of Mankind[/]

Having set the stage with previous discussions of Dumezils tripartite theories, this broadcast takes these "into a more overall description and...a more precisely articulated multi-level kind of understanding".

This is an extensive look at the three functions, which are then individually sub-divided and examined in depth. It might sound a bit dry or academic but this isn't the case as Edred always seems to find a way to relate the ancient to the present-day. Personally I could listen to the historical all day anyhow, but not everyone agrees...

There's a short review of basics, of the divine archetypes and their human correspondences. From there each of the three functions are broken down once again into three. Some of these have further divisions...

For the Ancients this was not a rigid caste system as we might think. There was often cross-functional mobility within a persons lifetime. Edred advises that this could be a worthy goal for a young person today, trying to hit all the functions, so to speak, in ones lifetime. As for myself, I guess I've done a lot of this, but entirely by accident, hard luck and trouble...

RFR #29 - RUNA and the Occultizoid Another non-review from Geoff the Loyal.

RFR #29 - RUNA and the Occultizoid

Here's a topic that continues to be relevant. Edred spoke of a "war on the occult" way back in RfR #2 and also devoted time to it in RfR #27. This is the most in-depth discussion yet of the important distinctions between the esoteric and the occult...

Interesting how the occultizoid has a dual tendency of intentionally trying to obsfucate the perfectly clear while "explaining" away things truly mysterious as having obvious and simple answers. What initially seems an odd paradox he calls two sides of a coin. Both can divert one from real discovery. I think it's undeniable as a phenomenon, but who/what's really behind such things? Strange.

Occultizoid nincompoopery may be dangerously misleading for the true seeker, yet some have hypothesized this as a clever way to cull out those who aren't so destined. Sandtrap or sandbox, a kind of spiritual Darwinism?

Great talk. I really loved the sub-section about our fragmented mythology and the role initiation plays in reconstructing the totality of the true tradition. I've noticed so many "side topics" in these broadcasts are valuable gems. Take good notes so you'll remember where they are!

RFR #28 - Virtues of the Third Function

A follow-up to RFR #25 - "Virtues of the First Two Functions", this podcast starts with a brief but very interesting modern history of the named Germanic virtues and how they came to be so called/compiled. Though originally 9 in number, Edred has expanded this listing to 13.

The main talk focuses solely on the 3rd function virtues, the others being previously covered. He has renamed these, as the original names weren't always quite descriptive or sometimes even Germanic enough. Even then he's not always satisfied because there just isn't a good enough English alternative. Edred tells why.

It's a lively and informative talk, full of ancient cultural detail that also manages to knock down misconceptions and inform the entire philosophical construct. Tune in!

RFR #27 - Ongoing/Newly Completed Projects and the War on the Occult Another non-review from Geoff.

RFR #27 - Ongoing/Newly Completed Projects and the War on the Occult

Edred has more to say about his recently completed "Runes and Magic", 2nd Edition. This project has been uppermost in his mind as parts have been the topic of previous broadcasts. In summing things up about magic he cryptically states that, " The nature of the undertaking is one that always provides humanity with that which humanity needs, not necessarily what it desires".

Many other notable thoughts and insights, particularly about personal initiation... As for myself, I can't wait to get my paws on this book.

Another one, not yet completed, is "National Socialism and the Occult". He gives us a preview of the project, sure to be greeted as "controversial or sensational" by some. There is plenty of thoughtful comment about this topic as well, some quite humorous. It's a book that needs to be written, especially with all the misinformation out there, used by different groups for their own reasons. Edred means to end all that, to bust all those bubbles with plain fact. I think you have to tip your hat to the man who's willing to even address a complex and somewhat gooey issue like this. Crucial, and very important.

The last part of the talk is a little more about the "war on the occult" that must be waged by those in the Runic tradition, and just what that means.

RFR #26 - The Polarian Method in Larger Context

"Odhinn is the God of polarities. He balances any and all polar opposites by indulging in the extremes at each end of the spectrum. By oscillating between these extremes a dynamic balance is achieved which no other method is capable of achieving". -Edred

These broadcasts are starting to build on one another so listening to them all really pays off...Having said that, this one is challenging for me, loaded with paradox that I haven't fully worked out. All said, it's a phenomenal broadcast. I think it's safe to say that it goes to the heart of matter...

In 1991 Edred was inspired to give a series of 8 seminal talks in Austin and later these were published as Runarmal I. In the intro to that booklet one reads they were given on Saturday mornings with little advance publicity and open to anyone who came. Never says why he did it this way, but consider this statement:
"I was determined to give the talks, regardless of whether anyone was there to hear them or not. They would in fact constitute magical utterances to the objective universe, if people were there fine, if not, the utterances would have their effects anyway."
I'll hold on to that. There's something brilliantly stubborn, even quixotic about the act itself, maybe intended as an antidote to living in this shameful and un-heroic age...

"The Polarian Method and RUNA" was one of those talks. Edred uses this broadcast to reiterate, clarify and expand the concepts. I listened several times. Edred reviews the basic "passion/precision" pair of the original talk and then puts it inside Aristotles critical theory triangle. He places "passion" into the "inspiration" angle, logical enough, with a balance or synthesis required between the other two angles of "imitation" and "craftmanship" (together now making up "precision").

Further expansion on the idea comes by substituting other names, from familiar from soul-concept models and mythological sources. So, comparing triangles, mania/mimemsis/techne = inspiration/imitation/craftsmanship = othr/minni/hugr = Odhinn/Munnin/Huginn = Odhinn/Mimir/Hoenir = enthusiasm/memory/cogitation. The insertion of the mythology is perfect here. I especially liked Edreds description of Hoenir/Mimirs time with the Vanir. This was all a bit of an unexpected twist for me honestly. I guess I'm surprised to see them connected and related so closely. Eye-opening!

Radio Free Runa - Talk #25 Summary Once again, "Reviews by Geoff".

RFR #25 - Virtues of the First Two Functions

Okay, it's not the snappiest title you ever came across, but this little gem of a talk will make up for all that and them some...

Who talks much about virtue these days? People equate virtue with good and that's about it. I had a further vague idea that a virtue is a virtue, but for our Indo-European forbears, virtue depended on your place in the culture. Edred provides substantial food for thought about this as he lists and explains contrasting codes for the first two Dumezilian functions. These held constant from ancient times through the medieval.

Will the virtues of the third function be covered in a future talk? Edred doesn't say, but maybe so...

What I find striking is to see the very strong correlation between the virtues of the first function and the Odian "way of working" described so beautifully in RFR #5.

Radio Free Runa -- Talks 22 to 24 This is continuation of the saga "Reviews by Geoff".
Hail the Reviewer!

RFR #22 - Ancient Greek Culture

Edred states right up front that this important, exoteric subject can in no way be done with in one broadcast, so his method is to concentrate on the aspects that most affect us today. Though Indo-European, the influence of these Ancients was not direct, but came to us in other ways. Many Greek ideas are so ingrained we do not even think of them as ideas, much less consider their origins.
There's a bundle contained in this wide-ranging talk. Funny, but I never knew, for example, that the Gods Apollo and Dionysius were foreign imports to Greece. Or that the theatrical term "tragedy" translates as "goat song". The section on Plato and some of his key ideas was most illiuminating. I'll be listening to this one again. A fascinating, entertaining talk.

RFR #23 - Fetch/Fylgja

As a result of burning questions posed by listeners, the "fetch" is an concept that continues to intrigue and inspire. Those questions sparked this broadcast. He also promises an expansive new edition of his Masters thesis on the larger issues of runic psychology and the Germanic soul structure, based on the rites of transformation undergone by the hero Sigurthr.
"Fravashi" is an Indo-European (Iranian) cousin of our "fylgja". This is spoken on briefly, offered as background and related to our mythology, with Sigurthr, and his associated gynomorphic fetch, Brunhild. The zoomorphic form is covered in greatest depth, however.
The Germanic zoomorphic fetch concept is contrasted with the American Indian "totem" animal, which some confuse. Edred speaks on Indo-European ideas about animal sacrifice. Animals as divine representatives of the Gods of the of our ancestors...
Some practical tips are given about how a person might discover and recognize his/her zoomorphic fetch and the three categories of these animals. This is a fascinating section meant as a general guide to help in personal, operative use by the Odian. I don't want to spoil it- I'll only say it's more than helpful.

RFR #24 - Freewheelin' Edred

No topic today but an "all-call" from the Yrmin-Drighten.
Edred wants to interact with you, the listener. Questions called for: technichal aspects, on lore, runes, the Germanic tradition, social/cultural issues, art and literature relating to our tradition, pop-culture, comments/reactions to broadcast ideas. He said it before, he's saying it again and I hope he keeps on saying it. Now is the time to hear and act. Speaking for myself I'm convinced that if you're one of the few to be in a position to hear and understand these broadcasts, it's no accident!
Education, transformation and tribalization are the 3 legs of a stool Edred again says must be built. He has eloquently spoken about this need in RFR #19 - "What is to be Done?". What I like about it is that it's no "pie in the sky" prescription for what ails us. Though certainly a huge project which no one person can accomplish, it is all possible in the long-term, with precedent. But it begins with the individual, and things infinitely more do-able...
"What are we now but the shattered remains of tribes?", he asks provocatively.
The public schools and film are two parts of the current (mis)educational mix that Edred touches on here. He feels very strongly about the schools and can become a downright loveable curmudgeon real fast on the topic. I wouldn't want to be on the other side of that Old Norse curse he throws out there on those responsible! (Maybe someone can translate this, because I'm only guessing what it was). He'd like your "horror stories" about the schools. Personally, I know the schools are in bad shape, but I don't think it's as monolithic or planned out as you'd think. I'm not saying it isn't a mess because it is, of course. What's your take?
For Edred film is more of a mixed bag and he wants to collect your recommendations for films, new and old, that might relate to our traditions, directly and indirectly...

FR #21 - More on the "Theory of Magic" and the Folk Schools Concept

These things just keep getting better and better. The Yrmin-Drighten has the rare ability to synthesize a vast amount of information from many sources, focus on the critically important things, and patiently teach with clarity.

The Theory of Magic portion of this podcast represents a continuation of RFR #20. But let's say instead it's a much a deeper discussion and developing of those ideas. I wrote down so many notes that my hand went numb. This one you might really want to listen to...

The Folk Schools concept is part of the re-education idea that Edred touched on in RFR #19, "What is to be Done?", as part of "re-education", one leg of that three-legged stool he spoke of. It's absolutely critical and I think it might take many different forms in the days ahead. There's much food for thought here. I think the need for such things are constantly in all of our minds. What I can't wrap my brain around is how do you re-educate people who don't want it or even know they need it?

Edreds great parting quote: "As our culture descends increasingly into blindness, let us once more become that One-eyed man and by so becoming, become like Gods".

RFR #20 - Runes and Magic, Part 2 (Theories of Magic)

In this broadcast, more new detail from the newly re-released "Runes and Magic", 2nd edition! As introduced in RFR #17, this esoteric classic, first released in 1986, has been given a new life, a chance [to] have more impact...

Chapter 2 of the book is on basic theories of magic, and forms the topic of this talk...

Edred begins by speaking about various historical theories, most having the disadvantage of built-in prejudices against the idea of magic as viable.

Yet from some forward-thinking anthropologists in the 1970s a new "semiotic theory" emerged. Far from sharing the unscientific dismissal of previous theorists, this group became convinced that magic often worked and sought a way to explain it.

Semiotic theory of communication and the semiotic theory of magic are explained in detail with associated basic principles. Humans as the symbol-making animal and the human will as essential the ingrediant in the semiotic theory of magic is emphasized. Subtle differences separating the ideas of religion and magic are discussed...

Odhinn is given as a model from our own mythology and a much deeper elaboration of the process of magic at work is provided... There's substance aplenty here, and it really piqued my interest. Fair warning: You might just end up like I did, breaking down and ordering a copy of "Runes and Magic"...

Radio Free Runa - Talk #19 This is another in the series of "Reviews by Geoff".

RFR #19 - "What is to be Done?

(If you've been listening to these talks, by now you might feel yourself enrolled, inadvertantly, in an astonishing course of studies... Again you find yourself in a strange classroom with the others. On the board some words, "The Way of Runa" and an odd alphabet. It's dark and you can't see much else. Once more, the mysterious figure enters the room. You make out his silouhette heading to the front. It's the professor, the one who calls himself Edred. No telling his topic today. The voice starts and another lesson begins. Riveting, sometimes shocking in depth and synthesis, entertaining, always timely and timeless, these are the things you've been needing to hear... What is this class? Nobody talks like this or about these things... These old moss-covered things, unspoken for centuries, strangely resonant... You feel somehow destined to be right here, in the chair you are sitting... You turn to your neighbor and ask, "Where am I?". This is not just another class and, no, this isn't a dream...)

Okay, I'll admit the above paragraph is getting pretty hokey, but it really describes just about the way I feel sometimes listening to these RFR broadcasts. Hope you're getting a lot out of them too. If not, it's your own fault!

RFR #19 - "What is to be Done?

A question that "weighs on everyones minds, or should." This talk is a biggie, one that lays a foundation for discussion of an impolite and immodest idea, "the total transformation of ourselves and our culture". He points to three processes that can provide solutions. None are easy, but neither are they impossible. Edred promises the "how" of these worthy goals will be the topic of many further talks...

A funny anecdote is relayed about the early days, in which "Father Nature", an old enigmatic and quizzical spook, suddenly appears at a public event, demanding to know, "What is it about? What do you get out of this? Why are you doing this?", and quickly vanishes. These questions persist as they continue to strike Edred as legitimate and fundamental. The answers must be practical, and he poses a possible way forward, with what needs to be done to make some headway.

Differences in this answer vary somewhat from country to country. Truly multicultural societies require different approaches from places that are not...

Abbreviated, the three processes are: transformation, re-education, re-tribalization. This project is the work of the Gild and has barely begun. These lines of work apply to the individual and society as a whole. From the first, the other two follow. Individual tranformation of each person must be primary, with individual training of the mind, the spirit, a first step in a "heroic life". Out of this process can come the right teachers for re-education to take place and as this evolves, re-tribalization...

My short notes do not convey the depth and scope of the talk, as you must listen for yourself to get that. Plenty of insightful cultural critique is thrown into the mix...

Radio Free Runa #16[/]

I really appreciate this topic because it is about everything that is so deeply relevant and inspiring in my life today. The title doesn't do justice to the practical usefullness of this talk.

Different types of myths are discussed, but more importantly the function of the heroic myth, how and why it worked for the Ancients and how we can duplicate this today.

For our ancestors, "The past is a mythic creation about an ideal future", a paradoxical way of stating how they viewed and used the myth. A great deal of time is devoted to the this approach as compared to the debilitating, "cynical and absurd" attitude toward myth today.

Radio Free Runa - Talks #10 to #15 Radio Free Runa #10- Social Structure of the Germanic People
This lore-based lecture is a follow-up to RFR #7.

Dumezil's analysis of the "Rigsthula" in light of his Indo-European tripartite structure is the main source for this first part of this talk. Plenty of insight here. The Rigsthula rubs some people the wrong way, including me, particularly with the delight its writer takes in ridiculing of the "thralls".This brings up the interesting question Edred lays out at the start, namely, "Is that structure a reflection of the higher order or a projection from the mundane world onto the mythic?"

Edred moves on to some interesting peculiarities of Germanic tradition as compared to other Indo-European traditions. Also spoken about, at some length, is the trans-tribal social structures of oath-bound individuals, which I believe will be covered more fully in future talks.

A major theme is the difference between the polytheist Indo-European idea of a "metagenetic or genetic relationship" versus the monotheist Middle-Eastern idea of "contractual relationship" of the divine and human realms. One of the things I think that Edred is saying is that the former really provides for a better and more useful way of working. I don't think anyone can honestly argue with that given the overabundance of belly-flops and dead-ends that monotheism seems to produce!

In answer to the question about the origins of the social structure, whether created by God or man, Edred answers "both!", and calls it a false question because, if you accept the Indo-European divine/human relationship, this distinction cannot be made.

Radio Free Runa #11 - Social Structure... II

A continuation of the theme from last broadcast, this talk focuses on less ancient times and looks briefly at some possible ways forward...

Edred reviews the Dumezilian model of ideal societies and throws us a curve-ball by introducing a previously unmentioned 4th function of the "Entertainers". He brings it up because although such people may have played a minor role in ancient times, these days that role has grown.

The ways in which Christianity co-opted and undermined the existing ancient social structure during the Middle Ages, the collapse of that decayed structure and the rise of Rationalism is examined, with special attention paid to the evolving attendent philosophical underpinnings...

If you're a person who likes history, this stuff is nectar.

Secular "reason" replacing Christian "faith" might be a step forward, but Edred maintains it is also a non-traditional path that leads to failure. Three later-era representatives of this are provided in German Nazism, Soviet-style Communism and US consumer-Capitalism along with what was/is dysfunctional about each when analyzed using the social-function model. (Just my opinion here- and not because I am an American- but the first two did seem to have the added special feature of attracting and enabling madmen. Not sure why.)

In post-modern consumer societies this 4th function group, the Entertainers, have become our Gods, says Edred. When true Gods are lost, is the need for them so strong that we must create a new diversionary pantheon? Are Paris Hilton, Oprah, and A-Rod not decayed present day equivalents of Gods/Goddesses? Such societies, then, like the US and most of the world now, have become dominated by the 4th function...

RFR#12 - Galdrar in Icelandic Folktales and Books of Magic

Here's a very entertaining and interesting topic about which I thought I knew more about than actually I did. Translation: I didn't know jack!

This talk is well worth a listen to on its own, but also will point the seeker in the right direction for further knowledge...

The place of spells and complex magical signs, explanations of various words used for different types of magic, and a list of some the important practioners/collectors of this material are discussed.

The excerpt about "Erikr" (sp?) which Edred takes from a Jaqueline Simpson collection and comments on is funny and enlightening at the same time, a pretty neat trick that isn't easy to do, but which I always like...

Radio Free Runa - Summary of the First Nine Talks Following is a summary for each of the first nine Radio Free Runa talks. The author is from the Rune-Gild.

The First six talks are free. Additional talks are available individually or via a subscription.

Talks 10 through 16 are now available as well.

Radio Free Runa #1- Inaugural Broadcast
Nope, Edred's not talking about the Presidential inauguration here, but rather the beginning of the Radio Free Runa series of lectures.
Simply, "A new year requires new approaches".
Indeed. And so he lays out his plan and method. Three days a week, with three breaks per year, a systematic approach starting with basic topics building to more advanced. It doesn't get much better than this, in my opinion. Very timely.
In a nod to the oral tradition and his teacher, Dr. Edgar Polome, Edred revives it here, with the goal making the teachings more accessible. He reviews a wide range of modern persistent, unconscious beliefs/behaviors that come directly from the ancestors and concludes with a direct question to all: "How much better could we be if we reclaimed it consciously?"
What do you think, just how much better?

Radio Free Runa #2- "Become Who You Are"
Edred did not overtly title this one, so find a better one if you can. I pulled this nugget out from a part of the conclusion. Actually, he's quoting someone else here, though I couldn't quite catch who...
There's a great deal of valuable info contained in this broadcast. The concepts of esoteric vs. exoteric are discussed. The two types of Germanic tradition, "arfr" and "sithr" elucidated, a distinction so important to the work of the serious student. Also, and especially for us, the place of the runic tradition in all this is made clear.
We're offered three more Old Norse words: "odhr", "hugr" and "minni", familiar to any seeker who has read much about the Northern tradition.
Much more to the point is, Edred says, is the 3-fold method these terms suggest. Very illuminating, to say the least.
For people cut off from themselves, looking, willy-nilly in every other direction, Edred has these words: "Become who you are".

Radio Free Runa#3- On Culture
Edred says Friday broadcasts are meant to be a more wide-ranging application of his ideas, and especially as they apply to modern pop-culture.
So with that in mind, this talk lays the groundwork, so to speak, by examining just what is meant by the term "culture", using the culture grid contained in the article "How to be a Heathen", the book Blue Runa and elsewhere.
Fascinating stuff, and for me much better heard than read somehow. How is it, as Edred maintains, that we have become, as a culture, alienated from the root idea behind the concept of culture? Thoughts anyone?

Radio Free Runa #4 - Germanic Weekday Names
A remote broadcast done before live audience at the Woodharrow Institute, Edred seems in high spirits here. There's the ubiquitous cel-phone going off every now and then, periodically a couple of native woodpeckers decide to go nuts on the side of the building, and Edred even takes some audience questions at the end. It's everything a remote broadcast should be!
I thought I knew this topic but there's a lot of interesting detail that I had no idea about. Though I knew the names, I never knew the ancestors actually had only 5 days in their week. Well worth a listen, especially for comparative linguists, because this aspect of the weekday names is covered in fascinating detail...
But there was much more... Most intriguing to me was the idea that of all the Germanic-named days surrendered by some of our peoples (Icelanders for example), Wednesday was the easiest to part with since folk were somewhat scared of Woden anyway...

Radio Free Runa #5 and #6 - Runes and Runa (Parts I and II)
Edred immediately says a better title for this lecture pair would be "Runa, the Natural Pathway to Inner Freedom", but it wouldn't fit in the header space!
I can't say much about these talks. In silence I bow my head to them and the wisdom behind them. They are a "must listen". Vast, wide-ranging, as deep as space. Trying to sum up here would only do them a disservice and anyone reading this. I've heard them twice and I'm going to do myself a favor and listen again. Listeners, help me on this one.
Here is a rough list extracted from my notes of some areas covered: Runes and runa as a "way of working" with Odhinn as the originator, Jungs riverbed, ancestral concepts of nature especially as discovered in our etymology, our own nature, ideas of tribal vs. universal religions, the modern idea of spiritual "choice", ideas of resonance and interlocking forms of morphic resonance, Pan-Indo-European organization of the Gods, loyalty, troth, and the "hyper-body", especially as repesented by the World-tree.
I really loved the use of the tree as metaphor for the hyper-body. This image alone gave me a whole new understanding of things, and that happened repeatedly in this set. Many areas for discussion.
A truly great pair of lectures. Give them a listen.

Radio Free Runa #7 - Ancient Germanic Tribes and Tribalism
Here is an exoteric topic of great interest as Edred focuses on the ancient Germanic tribes. What does the concept of "tribe" mean really and how did this fit into the Ancients sense of their place in the world? To whom did an individual owe loyalty? How did one become a member of a tribe? What did the idea of "nation" mean to them? There's plenty of important nuance provided here, as healthy antidote to our modern misconceptions and prejudices...
In broad detail he looks at the various tribal names, their meanings and what this says about how they viewed themselves.
Finally, the three different types of ancient tribal government are examined in some detail, and a look at how tribes were formed...
Promised in the future is a talk about "the way foward". That is, for us today, what did we lose when we lost our tribal heritage, and what can be regained without giving up modern gains (like this nifty computer I'm banging on)? That should be a good one!

Radio Free Runa #8 - Our Basic Esoteric Principles
Folks, in my poor attempts to describe these broadcasts, the well of superlatives is starting to run dry. I should've saved some but I didn't know I was going to need them so badly. This is particularly true for the esoteric (Wednesday) broadcasts. If I didn't like them and find them tremendously valuable, then I wouldn't have this problem, I assure you.
Well, it's not a bad problem to have. These talks are great gifts, a boon to whoever is ready to hear them.
Edred begins by saying that while this is not a "basic catalogue", he has never so directly addressed these principles in such a systematic way. They are: Runa, Isolate Intelligence, Hierarchism, Proximity and Geneticism. They underly the work of the Gild, his own work, the Germanic tradition and Indo-European heritage as a whole. "If these principles are grasped in essence, everything else follows," enigmatically adding that a 6th principle is later to be added.
For me, this broadcast is worth listening to repeatedly, as my sponge can only soak up so much at a time.

Radio Free Runa #9- "How I Heard the Word Runa"
This broadcast has the distinction of being a mostly personal story that the others are not. It's told in a way that manages to be many things, alternately and sometimes at once: Funny, poignant, inspiring and even instructional...
People have, no doubt, wondered about this incident, alluded to in many writings. Here it is... What I found beautiful about it was how it speaks to the quirky ways in which our destinies sometimes make themselves known, and it does so in completely sincere and personal way.
There's the Wiccan priestess girlfiend, a pilgrimage in un-air conditioned vehicle to find a Tibetan Lama - somewhere near Houston- in the Texas summer (this heat can be almost deadly I promise you!). The truth, as they say, is stranger than fiction.
