Jon Bernthal “fought” for a role in “King Richard”.
The 45-year-old star appears in the film – which focuses on the life of Richard Williams (Will Smith) and how he guided daughters Venus (Saniyya Sidney) and Serena (Demi Singleton) to tennis stardom – as ‘trainer Rick Macci and explained how he was desperate to be involved in the film.
When asked what attracted him to the movie, Jon told the Hollywood Reporter, “So much. I fought for it. They didn’t see me for it initially. And I really wanted to, really do it.
“What is so beautiful about telling this story is that everyone has some knowledge of it – like you said, they might be the biggest icons in sports alive right now. . “
The ‘Punisher’ star continued, “I think it’s so much better that it’s not that flagship Grand Slam and Wimbledon movie. The palpability of the impossibility of that dream is really brought out by telling the story of it. ‘story at that time. “
Jon praised the film’s script and was thrilled to portray a different athletic trainer from the norm.
He explained, “The script blew me away. I’m a former athlete raising young athletes and I thought this story really explored the whole spectrum of youth sports and how toxic they can be.
“As far as Rick is concerned, some of the coaches in my life have had such an incredible impact on who I am as a man, as an artist, as a father, as a husband. Most of the time, the coaches in the movies are portrayed as such builders or complete jerks.
“What really impressed me with the way Rick was portrayed in the script, and then all I’ve heard about him is just that he has this pure, pure love for the game.”
