King of the Castle, Gm 48: Islanders vs Kings, game notes, lines and more

The New York Islanders (19-20-8), who are on the first of a straight game, take on the Los Angeles Kings (28-17-7) who are on the second of a straight Saturday night at Crypto .com Arena. The puck drop is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET, 7:30 p.m. local time (PT).

The New York Islanders recorded a season-high 47 shots in their 4-3 shootout loss to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday.

“I mean, we’re happy with the way we played, but not happy with the result,” Matt Martin said after morning practice. “You know, unfortunately, we are in a position where we need results. So now we just have to come in with the same mindset we had against San Jose every night, and I think more often than not we’ll come away with a “W.”

Following the loss, New York Islanders head coach Barry Trotz said it might have been the best game of the season for the Islanders, but “the hockey gods haven’t blessed us. this evening”.

The Islanders didn’t run any lines in Saturday morning practice, but Trotz said the roster will be the same starting Thursday. That means Josh Bailey will be a healthy scratch for a second contest in a row, with Greene being the other.

Semyon Varlamov (3-9-1, 2.57 GAA, 0.916 SV%), who hasn’t started a game since Feb. 12, will get the start for the New York Islanders on Saturday. Trotz had mounted Ilya Sorokin and planned to start Varlamov against the Calgary Flames on Feb. 12, but a positive COVID-19 test after warmups forced him to miss that game and the next two.

Varlamov served as Sorokin’s backup for Tuesday’s game against the Seattle Kraken and Thursday against San Jose.

On Friday, Jonathan Quick got the Los Angeles Kings started in their 4-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks. Cal Peterson is expected to start for LA on Saturday.

The Kings are 7-1-2 in their last 10 games.
